Signed and numbered photogravure in an edition of 10 by Nicolai Howalt.
For the portfolio Herbarium, a collaboration between Printer’s Proof and the Natural History Museum of Denmark and Nicolai Howalt created contemporary prints working with historic copper plates.
Driven by a spirit of experimentation, Nicolai Howalt’s collaboration with Printer’s Proof sought to extend the possibilities of photo etching even further. The project Herbarium, consisting of six etchings, was created through a hybrid process that merges contemporary UV-printing technology with traditional intaglio techniques. The resulting works present photographic impressions of plant species that gradually became part of Denmark’s botanical landscape over centuries.
Rather than appearing as conventional herbarium specimens preserved on paper, these images take on a different character. The metallic pigments embedded in the prints transform the selected botanical pages into objects resembling fossils—material traces that evoke distant geological eras.
Each etching in Herbarium captures the delicate condition of the documented plants, while the translucent petals lend them an ethereal, almost spectral presence. Although accompanied by precise scientific annotations along the margins, the works seem suspended beyond any specific moment or place, existing in a realm detached from both time and geography.
