Unique diptych in an edition of 10 by Nicolai Howalt.
In an investigation of the chemical process within the photographic medium, Nicolai Howalt works with old, expired light-sensitive photographic paper.
Bypassing both camera and exposure to light he places the unexposed sheets directly into the developer in the darkroom. Over time, the chemical stability of the paper has broken down—the silver halides, which are normally evenly distributed across fresh photographic paper, have begun to migrate. This natural aging process causes the silver to concentrate in some areas while leaving others completely bare. The result is a range of abstract forms: patches of white where no silver remains, and varying tones where the silver is unevenly dispersed.
The encounter between chemistry and aesthetics become reminiscent of the alchemistic tradition as well as an exploration of fragility and the state of constant change.
